Microsoft has granted a reprieve to Windows XP, extending the deadline for PC makers to obtain licenses for the operating system through the end of May 2009, reports dbtechno.com.
The previous deadline had been Jan. 31, according to BBC News.
Though XP was supposed to disappear by January 2008, the unpopularity of Vista has kept Redmond extending the life of its predecessor. Many PC makers had been thwarting Microsoft’s deadlines by offering XP “downgrades” from Vista, anyway.

After a first round which lasted 14 years, it seems that we have a second one.
The first case trial between Microsoft and EU lasted 14 years ( 1993 – november 22, 2007). In the first round, the Microsoft company was accused of unfair competition and abuse of dominant position, promoting Windows Media Player in the operating system Windows.
The European Court acknowledged EU’s right and Microsoft paid in 2004 record fines – 497 millions euro and in 2006 – 280 millions euro. The case was solved by eliminating the Windows Media Player from the operating system. Thus, it appeared the “Windows Xp N” operating system.
After 2 months from the final ending of the conflict, Opera brought Microsoft to court for the same reasons, especially for promoting Internet Exporer in the operating system. In my opinion, Opera is too late because Microsoft brought Internet Explorer in Windows 10 years before.Though, allowing for the precedent solution, we can expect for another record fines.
Do not worry! We may assist on the third round. (more…)

Monday, February 18 2008, a day that could mark the end of the “war” to impose the next standard after the already classical DVD. Toshiba with his format HD-DVD are near to capitulate in the fight with Blu-Ray technology promoted by Sony. At the end, Toshiba has paid the price of a weak marketing and to a space of smaller sensitive storage of the HD-DVD, despite of the price of a Blu-Ray Disc, which is more expensive than a DVD High Definition.
For everyone, the end of this war of the formats is a good thing, inclusively for the market. (more…)
